Trump Defunds Voice of America: Major U.S. News Agency Placed on Administrative Leave

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order significantly defunding Voice of America (VOA) and other organizations under the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM). This action has led to the placement of over 1,300 VOA employees on administrative leave, effectively ceasing the agency's operations.

The White House justified the funding cuts by citing concerns over VOA's editorial decisions, labeling some of its coverage as propaganda. This move aligns with the administration's broader efforts to reduce the size of the federal government, targeting entities not statutorily mandated.

Critics argue that defunding VOA undermines the United States' ability to disseminate unbiased news globally, especially in countries with restrictive media environments. Michael Abramowitz, VOA's director, described the shutdown as the first silencing of VOA in its 83-year history, stating that the president is "failing to protect U.S. interests."

The executive order also impacts other government-funded media outlets, including Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Radio Free Asia, which have played crucial roles in promoting democracy and providing unbiased news in regions lacking press freedom.

This development raises concerns about the future of U.S. international broadcasting and its role in countering misinformation and supporting democratic values worldwide.
